This circular brooch is set with a reverse intaglio crystal. This is a hemisphere of crystal that the jeweller has engraved and painted on the underside. This ingenious technique, which gives the Yorkshire terrier a three-dimensional appearance, was an English invention. Lambert & Rawlings showed examples of it at the London Exhibition of 1862.
