The range of shapes and decorations during the 45-year period of the Jiajing reign was extensive. The emperor was so concerned with immortality that many decorative motifs from the vast repertory were associated with longevity. However, one motif on the blue and white porcelains of the period has resulted in much scholarly debate. It is the so-called 'Magic Fountain' question, as illustrated on this porcelain ewer. The precise meaning and origin of these fountains are unclear. This ewer is inscribed on the base wan fu you tong ('May all happiness gather there').

| Physical description | Porcelain ewer inscribed with 'wan fu you tong' (may all happiness gather there) within a double circle in blue. It has a bulbous body with long curved neck and flaring mouth, loop handle with small ring at the top for attachment of a chain to secure the (missing) lid. On either side is painted a fountain of European style, a border of waves around the foot, plantain leaves on the neck and flowers on the handle and spout. |
