12th century (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This bowl is probably an early piece of lustre ware from the city of Raqqah (now in eastern Syria). The potter has decorated it with a brownish lustre pigment over a cobalt-blue glaze. The glaze does not cover the lower part of the body or the small foot-ring. The potter has painted a wide band around the shoulder with a row of three birds alternating with three gazelles, each set within a decorative arch.
