Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Furniture makers in Vizagapatam produced this table. The port on the east coast of India was famous for the production of luxury furniture worked with ivory. The design of the table is based on English examples of the 1780s. The inlaid oval top and the tapering legs with hanging bellflowers appeared in published designs of the period. The monogram on the table presumably belongs to Mary Baker. She was possibly the wife of a Mr Baker. He was listed as a resident of Madras Presidency (the region to which Vizagapatam belongs) from 1783 to 1807.
