This porcelain bowl is moulded in the form of an open lotus flower and is of a type of which a dozen examples are known. The underglaze blue decoration includes Sanskrit characters in 'siddham' type script. Sanskrit and Tibetan characters frequently appeared on items associated with Buddhism. This bowl may have been an offering bowl for a Buddhist temple.

Physical description

Moulded in the form of a lotus flower with two ranks of sixteen scalloped petals, the lower rank with projecting points on the outside, the rim foliate, with a small, low foot. In the centre onside is a medallion with a Sanskrit character in 'siddham' type script, and around the outside the upper rank of petals contains eight further characters alternating with floral sprays, forming an inscription. The six-character mark is written in underglaze blue.
