'A view of the Chandpal Ghat.' The Chandpal Ghat is now a ferry Ghat on the west bank of the river Hooghly near the High Court in Calcutta. Incidentally, this Ghat took its name not from an noble Indian, but from an obscure and forgotten local shopkeeper Chandranath Pal or Chand Pal who used to sell his petty merchandise beside the Ghat.

This is one print of sixteen contained in a volume, and entitled 'Fraser's Views in Calcutta'. These colour aquatints with small details painted by hand in watercolour were developed from a water-colour drawing by James Baillie Fraser (1783-1856).

Given by Mrs Reginald Smith, 11 Green Street, Mayfair, W.1. This acquisition information reflects that found in the Museum records (Asia Department registers and/or Central Inventory) as part of a 2023 provenance research project.
