Physical description

Dove-tail tapestry woven in coloured wools, and silver gilt paper thread on linen warps; the central motif is a large stylised baroque vase, carnations, tulips and other flowers, together with birds surround the vase. On each side of the vase, a man and a woman dressed in early 18th century dress. Silver gilt paper thread on beak of birds, and man's hat band. Backed with a speckled green and yellow wool textile (possible secondary).

Object history note

This cushion cover might have been one of a pair, as part of the dowry. It is unusual to find a pair still together.

Historical significance: Square cushion covers must have been used not only on chairs, since these were quite rare in farmers' homes right up to the 19th century. It is likely that they were also placed on benches or in carriages.
