Physical description

Projected costume design for Death. The design depicts a three quarter length male figure representing Death and wears an 18th century style scarlet frock coat; black waistcoat, shirt, cravat, and breeches; and scarlet top hat decorated with a black band, feathers, and a long black veil at the rear. The figure wears a skull mask on his face, and carries a cane topped with a miniature skull in his left hand. Unsigned by the artist. On the reverse is a pencil drawing of a male and female figure wearing mid 19th century style costumes.

Object history note

This costume design by Lez Brotherston is part of an extensive collection of designs donated to the Theatre Museum by the artist in 2002. The design was executed for the British stage premiere of Carl Nielsen's opera "Masquerade" performed by Opera North at the Leeds Grand Theatre, June 23rd 1990. The text by Vilhelm Anderson was translated by Simon Andrew Stirling with assistance from George Kennaway, and the production was directed by Helena Kaut-Howson and lit by Gerry Jenkinson. The cast included Mary Hegarty as Leonora, Geoffrey Dolton as Henrik, and Paul Nilon as Leander. The production was revived by Opera North in December 1991.
