Handbag

1939 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

The clutch, as the pouchette was now called, was either handle-less or had a residual handle and was typically plain and smoothly contoured. Vanity cases, produced by cosmetic companies such as Elizabeth Arden began to appear for travel and were fully fitted. A new cosmopolitanism associated with air travel and the cruise liner influenced handbag design. This bag by Elizabeth Arden has a mirror and square gilt powder compact and gilt lipstick. The inside of the bag is stamped 'Elizabeth Arden Patent'. It was given by Elizabeth Arden to the donor when visiting the USA in 1939 for the World's Fair.

As air travel became more popular from the 1930s, luggage allowed into aeroplane cabins had to be light and small enough to fit within the limited storage space. Cosmetics companies such as Elizabeth Arden began to produce compact vanity cases, fitted with lipstick, powder and a mirror, which became associated with the glamour of flying.
