SOUTH KENSINGTON MUSEUM. PROPOSED NEW BUILDINGS

Design, Architectural Drawing
ca.1870-90 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Pencil and watercolour drawing on paper backed with linen. The sheet contains three designs, the uppermost of which is a section of the 'Courts West of S. E. Court' and the 'East Library Staircase'. The 'Courts West of S. E. Court' take the form of four identical, single-storey spaces each top-lit with a coved ceiling. Adjoining the courts to the left is a screen of three round-headed arches. Adjoining the courts to the right is a two-storey block labelled 'East Library Staircase': the ground floor contains two pairs of columns; the first-floor is top-lit with a coved ceiling. In the bottom left-hand corner, the second design shows a longitudinal section of the 'Court East of Centre Court', with a ground-floor arcade of round-headed arches; to the right of this is a two-storey range with a pitched roof, of which the first storey is labelled 'East Library'. In the bottom right-hand corner, the third design shows a section of the 'East Library Staircase', again with two pairs of columns on the ground floor, and a coved ceiling and top-lighting on the first floor. To the left, via some steps, the staircase vestibule adjoins the 'present' South Court. To the right, the staircase vestibule is linked to a block with a round-arched arcade below, and a room labelled 'East Library' above. Entitled 'SOUTH KENSINGTON MUSEUM. PROPOSED NEW BUILDINGS.' Scale bar; annotations; some measurements. See also E.1042-1927.
