Oil on canvas artwork for a poster featuring a central image of the actor Seymour Hicks as Richard III wearing armour and red and blue tabard, a sword in his right hand, standing on the battlefield above two dead soldiers. At the top of the poster, above an armorial shield which is topped with a crown and flanked by two boars, is painted in black lettering SEYMOUR HICKS AS KING RICHARD III. Below the image of King Richard is the area where the lettering advertising the name of the theatre would have appeared. This has been painted with a pale blue and white cloud-effect background, but no lettering.

Object history
This was probably designed to advertise the condensed performance of Richard III that Seymour Hicks produced for Sir Oswald Stoll at the Coliseum, with music by Sir Edward German. Charles Buchel is more often associated with Herbert Beerbohm Tree who frequently commissioned him for to design posters and publicity material at His Majesty's Theatre.
