This painting shows a Chinese state official (called 'mandarin' at that time) in his court dress, complete with hat and necklace. In the 18th and 19th centuries, Europeans thought that Chinese clothes and hairstyles were unfamiliar, and numerous paintings similar to this one were produced to demonstrate these trends.

Physical description
Painting, rectangular with a central figure. The figure stands on a veranda and wears a long blue robe with embroidered chest detail. Around their neck, a string of beads, and on their shoulders, a short cape with red underside. They wear a black hat with red trim and a green band detail at the back.

This painting shows a Chinese state official (called 'mandarin' at that time) in his court dress, complete with hat, necklace and rank badge.
Originally part of a folio containing twelve images of court and state dress; 7 male figures and 5 female figures. The folio series is numbered D.640-1889 to D.651-1889.
Purchased from E. Parsons, accessioned in 1889. This acquisition information reflects that found in the Asia Department registers, as part of a 2022 provenance research project.
