Richard Strauss-Woche

Poster
1910 (printed)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

A poster advertising a week of musical performances of works by the German composer Richard Strauss (1864-1949) held in Munich, 23-28 June 1910. The Munich-based poster artist Ludwig Hohlwein admired the work of the British poster designers The Beggarstaffs, and, like them, used limited colours, concentrating on pattern, silhouette and integral lettering. In this poster the rich, dark colours of the printed design show strongly against the textured background. The singer depicted may be the soprano Zdenka Fassbender in the title role of Strauss's Elektra.
