Object history
'Juliette is a personage in Frédéric Soulié's romance 'Les Mémoires du Diable,' which was an enormous favourite with D.G.R. towards 1846, &c. Of course, the lithography as well as the design was done by himself: it must have been his first and was not far from being his last essay in lithographing. This performance dates long before Preraphaelitism - I shd. say 1846 or even /45. It is far from being a fine work of art, but it is a very great curiosity to amateurs of D.G.R.'s work. I don't fancy anybody in the world possesses a copy save myself, who possesses 8 or 10.'
