A Florentine Masquerade

Watercolour
1920 (painted)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

The setting for this watercolour is the Vasco dell'Isolotto in the Boboli Gardens in Florence, Italy. William Russell Flint (1880-1969) was one of the most successful watercolour painters of the first half of the 20th century. He remains well-known today through colour reproductions of his work. Flint has also become particularly popular for his erotic pictures of young women, sometimes wearing Roma dress. It is perhaps significant that the artist chose to present this particular watercolour to the Museum, with its sophisticated (rather than racy) subject-matter.
