Place of origin |
This drawing by Robert Smirke illustrates a scene from Laurence Sterne's A Sentimental Journey through France and Italy. Arriving in Calais, Yorick meets a monk called Father Lorenzo and initially declines to give him money. Yorick then strikes up a conversation with a lady, hoping that she will agree to accompany him on the next stage of his journey. When Lorenzo returns, Yorick is embarrassed by his earlier behaviour. After some hesitation, they exchange snuff boxes instead.
Smirke's original illustration was engraved and published by Charles Taylor in 1784. The print is entitled "CALAIS: Yorick presenting his snuff box to the MONK". The accompanying text reads:
"When you take a pinch out of it, sometimes recollect it was the peace-offering of a man who once used you unkindly, but not from his heart."
