This bust, possibly a study, is on an integral socle. The identity of the sitter is unknown, the source for the name 'Isabel' being the description in the artist's bequest. In 1901 Cecil Thomas was apprenticed to his father's gem-engraving business in Upper John Street, London. He exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts, London, from 1909 to 1974, initially specialising in gems, medals and seals, but also exhibiting medals and plaquettes. In 1918 he exhibited sculpture at the Royal Academy for the first time, and thereafter became active in that field. Thomas was also a Past Master of the Art Workers Guild.
