One of the Eight Immortals, Lu Dongbin was revered as a poet and swordsman. He is thus portrayed wearing a scholar's robe and cap, and holding a sword that is meant to destroy evil influences.

Purchased from a source not recorded in the Asia Department registers, accessioned in 1889. This acquisition information reflects that found in the Asia Department registers, as part of a 2022 provenance research project.
