This ring was acquired by the Museum in 1871 as part of a large collection of rings which had been assembled by the Victorian scholar Edmund Waterton. It was described at that time as medieval Egyptian.

Although it looks like a conventional cast metal ring it is cut from a single piece of haematite.

Physical description
Ring carved from a piece of haematite with a plain shank which widens at the shoulders to form a flat rectangular bezel. There are inscriptions in Arabic engraved on the bezel and the flat face of the shoulders.
