Mid 18th century style collarless long sleeved coat of chestnut brocade, woven with stylised flowers and foliage, over which are fixed appliqués of artificial gold-coloured fabric; fixed down the front edges are panels of orange synthetic fabric covered with heavy floral lace dyed chestnut to which are fixed, on the right side, metal buttons, with buttonholes on the left. From shoulder to hem are fixed pleated frills of yellow synthetic fabric woven with silver lurex each held under a strip of braid. Fixed to each sleeve is a bold cuff in orange synthetic fabric with a frill of the same yellow and silver fabric as the front frills held in place by a band of braid. The coat is lined with brown shot synthetic silk with the front panels in brown orange synthetic silk repp. The whole coat is liberally covered in white paint.

Object history
The costume was designed by Alix Stone for the character of Sherrin in Richard Rodney Bennett's first opera The Mines of Sulphur, Sadler's Wells Opera, 1965. It was later revived at the Coliseum when the Sadler's Wells Opera had become English National Opera, and later at English National Opera North.

Historical significance: The costume is the work of a distinguished theatrical designer for an opera by Richard Rodney Bennett, who was to become one of Britain's most distinguished composers. Bennett's previous music had been primarily for film and this was his first excursion into opera.
