Long sleeved mid-18th century style dressing gown with shawl collar and front edging and deep cuffs of fur fabric dyed in shades of brown. The carmine and black synthetic fabric is woven with a lurex pattern and the whole is overlaid with large random-shaped appliqués in a variety of fabrics, including velvet, moquettes, brocades and felt in various shades of carmine, purple and orange randomly overlaid with black bold netting and gold braids and occasional feathers. Some appliques are outlined or decorated with trails of composition material. Fixed around the waist is a bold pleated sash in a dull orange and black shot synthetic silk woven with a geometric design the ends trimmed with a bold cotton fringe in dull Venetian red. At either waist front edging is fixed a cotton cord tie. The costume is lined with brown and black shot synthetic silk.

| Object history | The costume was designed by Alix Stone for the character of Sherrin in Richard Rodney Bennett's first opera The Mines of Sulphur, Sadler's Wells Opera, 1965. It was later revived at the Coliseum when the Sadler's Wells Opera had become English National Opera, and later at English National Opera North. Historical significance: The costume is the work of a distinguished theatrical designer for an opera by Richard Rodney Bennett, who was to become one of Britain's most distinguished composers. Bennett's previous music had been primarily for film and this was his first excursion into opera. |
