Historical context | Formerly attributed to the French artist Bernard Picart, this drawing was in fact recognised by Robert-Jan te Rijdt (Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam) as a work by the Dutch artist Nicolaas Verkolje (1673-1746). The sitter is Frederick of Hesse-Kassel, future Frederick I of Sweden (1676-1751), son of Charles I, Landgrave of Hesse-Kasseland, and is based on a mezzotint portrait by Pieter Schenk I (1660-1713). The lady represented in the oval painting behind him is his second wife, Princess Ulrika Eleonora of Sweden, whom he married in 1715.He was then granted the title Prince of Sweden, during Ulrika Eleonora's rule as queen regnant from 1718 until her abdication in 1720. Frederick then succeeded her on the throne. |
