Tangka

16th century (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This scroll painting or tangka represents a mandala of Krishnayamari, a form of Vajrabhairava. This is a wrathful emanation of Manjusri, the personification of wisdom. At the top left is Vajradhara, the Adi-Buddha, representing Buddhahood. At the top right is a lama, possibly the teacher of the donor. At the bottom right corner Sridevi rides a mule. Both the main deity and Sridevi are important protector deities of the Gelukpa (Tibetan: sGe lugs pa) Order, from which this tangka probably came. The scroll work, open lotus flowers and figural style show evidence of Nepalese influence.
