This is a poster for an exhibition of Nash’s war paintings and drawings at the Leicester Galleries in London in 1918. Paul Nash (1889-1946) was originally trained as a painter. His landscapes, like this scene of First World War devastation, were frequently imbued with powerful symbolism. They subvert traditional landscape painting. Nash was an official war artist in both World Wars.
