Decorative panel designs

Drawing
ca. 1885 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

The ceramics decorated by William De Morgan were mostly for display rather than everyday use. The shapes were usually made by other people, and De Morgan used them as surfaces for his elaborate painted designs. His decoration was inspired by a mixture of sources. Two major influences were 16th century Turkish wares from Iznik, and lustreware made in Persia (Iran) in the 13th century. These designs show the direct influence of Persian leaf patterns.
