John Absolon worked as a portrait painter and a miniaturist in Paris. He then returned to England where he painted stage scenery and illustrated books. He painted this watercolour in about 1860 in the style of the Impressionist painters in France. Like them, Absolon enjoyed showing everyday life. Here we see a pier in the background and mothers with their children strolling on the beach and enjoying the sea and sunshine.
