Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This design seems to be the earliest example of Japanese influence on the work of E. W. Godwin. It combines Japanese images with panels of an English wallpaper designed by William Morris. The `Trellis' wallpaper of 1862 was originally inspired by rose trellises in the garden of Morris's home, Red House.
Godwin enjoyed using very different sources for one design. Here he has brought together images from an English country garden and Japanese prints to create a decorative scheme for the interior of an Irish castle. Perhaps Godwin saw a similarity between the trellis pattern and the square panelled paper screens shown in prints of Japanese interiors.
