Thomas Miles Richardson was born in Newcastle, in north-east England. He made many sketching tours across the border into Scotland. In this landscape of 1852 he seems to have added the figures only for extra visual interest. This is similar to the way 18th century watercolourists would include a peasant returning from market or a labourer trudging home after work.
