Pair of Shoes
1740s-1750s (made)
Artist/Maker | |
Place of origin |
Light or brighter coloured shoes were reserved for court and other formal occasions. They were known as 'dress' shoes. This pair in white leather originally had blue heels, which would have added a touch of bright colour. The toe has become rounded, a progression from the square, blocked toes that had previously been in fashion. Gleaming buckles would have fastened the latchets and added to the overall effect. Frederick, Prince of Wales wore a pair of white shoes for his wedding day in May 1736.
