Place of origin |
Burne-Jones was for a while one of the best-known painters in the world. He also kept a series of little sketchbooks in which he made designs for his paintings and for more intimate things such as jewellery. These drawings were not intended for commercial production. They were personal gifts for favoured friends and members of his family. Many designs for jewellery in the 19th century were intended to impress or copied earlier styles. These designs by Burne-Jones, however, are delicate. They are filled with a kind of symbolism much admired by his followers in the Arts and Crafts movement.
