Place of origin |
This hemishperical bowl stands on low truncated conical legs. There are four flanges projecting from the flat everted rim and two vertical handles rising from two opposite flanges. This is a standard Khorasan type.
The decoration is confined to two opposite flanges. On the front flange there is a pouring lip with two raised mouldings. Between the mouldings is a guilloche decorated with a five lobed palmette that is typical of Khorasan design.
Most typical of Eastern Iran are the two roundels engraved either side of the pouring lip. The circular frames are emphasized by incised circles executed with dividers. They enclose champleve designs of triangles interlacing with curving lines around central beads.
The flange opposite the pouring lip is decorated with an epigraphic cartouche engraved in bold champlevé letters. The inscription is written in thick, squat kufic with floriated letters.
Patina: uniform sooty brown.
