Decoration of the Oriental Court (now galleries 34 to 36) at the V&A

Design
1863 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Drawing in pencil, watercolour, gouache, gold paint, wash, and pen and ink, within a single-ruled border, on paper. This coloured design shows highly ornate decorative schemes for four sections of arcades. The arches depicted in the two upper arcades are semi-circular, whilst those in the two lower arcades are segmental. Each arcade is shown to have a unique structure, with the lowest forming enclosed windows or apertures, but they generally share the same patterning and colouration. The spandrels are decorated with arabesques, and the piers with a complex geometric design. Wash is used to indicate shadows and the surrounding architectural structure. Two Science and Art Department stamp marks, one of which gives the date ‘7 MAY/1863’. Some foxing, staining, and compass holes. Conservation mounting underneath lower corners.
