Place of origin

Drawing in pencil, watercolour, gouache, gold paint, wash, and pen and ink on paper. This coloured design shows a highly ornate decorative scheme for a section of arcade with semi-circular arches. The spandrels of the central arch depicted feature stylised, foliated arabesques enclosed within a decorative border which interlaces in the centre to form a circle. The piers are shown covered in a complex geometric design of many colours. The spandrel decoration of the partially indicated arches on either side of the central one is not shown. Wash is used to indicate shadows, empty space underneath the archways, and the surrounding architectural structure. Two Science and Art Department stamp marks, one of which gives the date ‘7 MAY/1863’. Note written in pencil on lower right-hand corner. Lower left-hand corner missing. Foxing, staining, fingerprint, and compass hole. Some conservation mounting underneath paper.
