Decoration of the Oriental Court (now galleries 34 to 36) at the V&A

Design
1863 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Drawing in pencil, wash, gouache, gold paint, watercolour, and pen and ink on paper. This coloured design shows an ornate decorative scheme for a section of arcade with segmental arches. The spandrels of the central arch depicted feature a large ornamental rosette on each side and stylised, foliated arabesques, all enclosed within a decorative border which interlaces in the centre to form a circle. The decoration of the piers and partially indicated arches on either side of the central one is not shown. Lines drawn across the span of each archway suggest enclosed windows or apertures rather than open passageways. Some creasing, foxing and staining, and compass hole.
