The Mummy

Poster
ca.1896 (printed)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This poster advertises a touring production of The Mummy, a farce by George Day and Allan Reed, originally produced at the Comedy Theatre in London, 11 August 1896. The ease with which Hassall produced posters, and his instinct for a lively and decorative approach, made him one of the most popular poster artists at the turn of the 20th century. Hassall clearly enjoyed depicting the unravelling embalming bands as fantastic shapes and incorporating the lettering into the design.
