This woman’s cotton head-cover is decorated using the dip-dye technique. The borders were gathered and dipped into a purple dye-bath, leaving the field yellow from the first dyeing.

Sir Caspar Purdon Clarke (1846-1911) acquired the piece on his tour of India in 1881-1882. An architect and archaeologist, he became Director of the Museum in 1896.
