The design of this dish was taken from Dutch Delftware ceramics, which were so popular in Europe that were taken to China for copying. The scene was misunderstood by the Chinese decorator, who repeats the background in the foreground, and represents birds flying in the sky in a unique manner. The Delft-style sponge work decoration was reproduced with some accuracy.
On the back of the dish is the Dresden inventory mark 'N=499', indicating that the piece was once in the collection of Augustus the Strong (1670-1733), Elector of Saxony, King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania.
