George Edward Fox was an architect who produced designs for all kinds of interior fittings. This fire grate is typical of the elaborate metalwork wrought by the great iron and steel manufacturers. The hearth was literally and figuratively the focus of the Victorian home. The chimneypiece and all its accoutrements were a place for display. This highly decorated design was probably intended for one of the main rooms of the house. The tall andirons or firedogs that support the grate might be based on 16th century engraved ornament patterns. This would be appropriate for a Tudor style house or interior.
