Place of origin |
The upper surface is incised with a conventional floral design and painted with a narrow diaper border in underglaze blue. Over the incised design and the blue border have been added, above the glaze in black and red enamel and gold, on the rim four butterflies with flowers between them, and in a medallion in the middle, the subject of the anointing of Saul. Saul kneels on his left knee whilst Samual anoints him from a horn-like vessel; in the background are buildings on a rock and an open gateway in a fence. Overdecorated in Holland ca. 1760. The design is taken from an engraving of 'The Annunciation of Saul'.
