Edward Steichen (1879–1973)
‘Lilac Buds: Mrs S.’
1906
The soft-focus style of this photograph is typical of Steichen’s early work. It shows the suggestive, rather than literal, quality of the movement in photography known as the Photo-Secession. The portrait was published in Camera Work, the magazine founded by Alfred Stieglitz as ‘the mouthpiece of the Photo-Secession’. Camera Work featured portfolios of exquisitely printed photogravures alongside essays and reviews.
