Place of origin

This is a poster for an American bicycle manufacturer. Following the example of publishers, some commercial manufacturers began to commission posters. After the introduction of the safety bicycle in the late 1880s, bicycle manufacturers advertised extensively and caused a cycling craze. They accounted for 10 per cent of all national advertising. The firms commissioned many leading artists, such as Edward Penfield (1866-1925), Maxfield Parrish (1870-1966) and Will H. Bradley (1868-1962), to make them.
