This is a poster for the magazine The Century. American publishers held competitions to attract new talent. The Century Company’s poster competition for its Midsummer number of 1896 was won by Joseph Leyendecker (1874-1951). Maxfield Parrish (1870-1966) won the second prize, and his poster was used the following year. Parrish’s imaginary figures and landscapes won him many competitions. A prolific freelance poster artist and a popular painter, he commanded exceptionally high fees from manufacturers and advertising agencies.
