Place of origin |
This poster was issued by the American magazine Harper’s Weekly. In the 1890s book and magazine publishers led the change in American poster design. Harper’s were aware of the French artistic poster at an early date, and in 1889 they commissioned Eugène Grasset (1841-1917). From April 1893 Harper’s Weekly issued monthly posters, all drawn by their art director, Edward Penfield (1866-1925). His designs used sensitive outlines, blocks of limited colour and simple compositions, often of a single figure reading.
