Artist/Maker
Place of origin

The technique used here is wax resist, similar to Indonesian batik. It is practised by people from various groups living in the south-west of China. Because they live in comparative isolation in mountainous regions, these groups have developed some unique traditions. These indigo wax-resist textiles are one distinctive manifestation of their culture.

The dark blue areas of the cloth were dipped in the dye bath many times. Lighter shades of blue were obtained by applying wax after only a few immersions in the dye. Synthetic indigo is frequently used today although three different indigo-bearing plants are still grown and processed for natural blue dye in some areas of China.
