Woman's petticoat, 1740-70, British; shot green/yellow silk taffeta, quilted diamond pattern
Physical description
Woman’s petticoat of shot green (warp) and yellow silk taffeta, lined with undyed wool. It is quilted in running stitch with green silk thread in a ¾-inch diamond pattern. The petticoat is made of 7 panels of silk with pocket openings in the side seams bound with ⅞-inch dark green wool tape. The same tape binds the hem. The petticoat is pieced at the waist with green poplin. There is a wide box pleat at centre front with pleats on each side and pleats either side of the centre back opening. The waist is bound with 1-inch (2.5 cm) wide linen tape, which forms the ties.
