This is one of four models of pierced window screens or jalis. Each model (Museum nos. 01130:1 to 4/(IS)) has carving on a tiny scale of a different pattern of tracery panels. They belong to a set of that transferred to the V&A from the former India Museum in 1879. These models show details of mosque architecture in Ahmadabad, western India, where there are exquisite examples of stone tracery jalis from the 15th and 16th centuries. Jalis were set into the wall of a building and allowed cooling air to
circulate.
