Place of origin

This a poster advertising Job cigarette papers. Czech-born, Alphonse Mucha (1860-1939) came to Paris in 1887. He was primarily a painter, taking up poster design only for financial reasons. For more than five years, however, he established his enduring reputation as a French poster artist, working in a medium that he considered ‘an art for the people’. Nevertheless, his design methods remained those of a painter. He made life studies and intervened personally at every stage of the print process.
