Europeans living in India in the 19th and early 20th centuries often acquired models of local buildings as souvenirs. This example is made of fragrant sandalwood. Along with two others in the V&A collection, it was collected by John Alfred Jones. He was an engineer who worked for the government in the Madras Presidency in South India between 1877 and 1904.
