Place of origin

This model represents the prayer niche or mihrab in the Mosque of Muhafiz Khan. It is one of a group showing details of mosque architecture in Ahmadabad, in western India. This particular mosque was built in the late 15th century. Although the V&A has several models of Indian buildings, examples showing interior details are more rare. This model corresponds exactly to the original except in one minor detail. The Arabic inscription, written in tiny letters on a piece of paper, is copied from one in the mosque, which gives the name of its founder and a date.
