This design for an elaborate silver centrepiece is heavily annotated to show what the client required. It indicates the makers, Storr and Mortimer, and the enormous price of £1,000. It mingles the styles of late Georgian centrepieces (about 1790-1830) with the soft naturalism of early 19th century British sculpture. The late Georgian examples were themselves based on 18th century grand French styles. The miniature allegorical sculptures arranged around the stem are typical of the 1820s. The base is partly in the Baroque style, with its symmetrical branches of acanthus leaf, and partly in a revived Rococo style. Matthew Uzielli was a famous 19th century collector of paintings and decorative art. He lived at Hanover Lodge in Regent’s Park, London, from 1848 to 1860.
